In June 2025, the CORTEX2 team was invited by the EU Directorate-General for Digital Services (DG DIGIT) to participate in VR Days — a two-part event held on 16 June in Brussels and 26 June in Luxembourg. Organised by the European Commission, the initiative aimed to raise awareness around extended reality (XR) solutions within EU institutions and to explore how such technologies can support more effective and sustainable operations.

Representing CORTEX2Alain Pagani, Principal Researcher, Computer Vision at DFKI, and CORTEX2 Project Coordinator, and Narek Minaskan, Project Leader and Research Engineer at DFKI, Augmented Vision group, presented the project’s vision, goals, and practical applications. One of the highlights was a live demonstration of our pilot on Industrial Remote Cooperation, which shows how XR technologies can enable immersive, collaborative industrial interventions using accessible devices and under limited bandwidth conditions.

This pilot demonstrates:

  • Real-time gesture and scene semantics analysis for video annotations
  • Audio transcription and voice commands for interaction and documentation
  • Integration of multiple video and IoT data sources to create a rich collaboration environment
  • Smart orchestration of video and metadata streams for optimised bandwidth usage

These events not only sparked valuable exchanges with European Commission colleagues but also helped inspire cross-institutional initiatives and future opportunities for collaboration around immersive technology.

We thank DG DIGIT for the invitation and look forward to continuing the conversation on how XR can transform work across sectors and institutions.
