EXTERNALISE’s progress during Sprint 3 of the CORTEX2 Programme
Q: How would you summarise EXTERNALISE’s latest developments during Sprint 3 of the CORTEX2 programme?
A: For this sprint, we demonstrated multi-user multi-node markerless motion capture using the new version of the Moverse Capture Studio that was previously extended to support multiple actors’ captures in real-time.
Q: What milestones did EXTERNALISE reach during Sprint 3, and what impact do they have?
A: Our demonstration involved two distributed nodes, with a system deployed on each one to capture a group of users, specifically two users for each node. All users were made virtually present in a shared environment, with a fifth user joining with a headset and participating while spectating the four physically remote users interact. This demonstration showed the feasibility of multi-user communication and interaction with embodied avatars mimicking their real-time behaviours, gestures and actions. This technology can drive future communications that extend beyond traditional video and audio, driving expressive avatars and conveying non-verbal communication cues efficiently and effectively.
Another key milestone in this third sprint was the live demonstration of multi-user live capture at this year’s Game Developers Conference (GDC25). Showcasing the technology in a gamified context attracted significant interest as a technology to drive future real-time interactive content for entertainment and advertising, among others.
Q: What are EXTERNALISE’s next steps?
A: We have already released these developments into our core product, the Moverse Capture Studio, and our goal moving forward is to continue improving the technology, its downstream integrations and support all the creatives using it. We are also seeking to partner with enterprises that aim to integrate it into future communication and interactive XR platforms.
